KT-005 review on SOTA Reflector: KT-005 Review

July 2025: The first confirmed SOTA expedition to use the KT-005 was by EA4R (Alfonso).
When it comes to hiking, size matters. The KT-005 ATU was digned to meet the need for quick
antenna tuning in all field conditions. Special thanks to Alfonso, EA4R, for sharing the photos.

24.08.2025: Another great example of building a super-portable radio station using
the ATU (KT-005) with the QMX transceiver. Such a compact setup is a perfect solution

Questions & Answers:

Q: Why was the ATU KT-005 project created?

A: There were no antenna tuners on the market appropriately sized
to match the portable QCX® and QMX® transceivers. The KT-005 is half
the size of previously available solutions, offering true portability
without compromise. We built the ATU we'd want to carry with us
on every SOTA summit.

Q: Is the visual resemblance to the QCX®/QMX® transceivers coincidental?

A: No — the ATU KT-005 was deliberately designed as both a visual and
functional extension of the QCX®/QMX® transceiver series. Aesthetics matter.
More products in this series are on the way (e.g. the KT-019 NanoSpeaker — see
the datasheet in the section below).

Q: Why were SMA connectors used instead of BNC connectors?

A: Our top priority was maximum miniaturization. Even the smallest right-angle
BNC connector would have noticeably increased the device's size. In the
current design, there's literally no space left inside. You can see this for yourself
in the project documentation. To connect the ATU directly to the transceiver,
we recommend using a compact BNC-to-SMA adapter. SMA connectors also offer
lower signal loss.

Q: Why did the development of the ATU KT-005 take so long?

A: Well... the ATU project turned out to be much more complex than
it initially seemed. Our goal has always been to resolve all known issues
and deliver a product with factory-level quality — not something that still
feels like a prototype. We hope this approach is both understood and appreciated.
